DTC Specialty Pharmacy - Oregon

Client background

This U.S.-based specialty pharmacy focuses on delivering personalized medication therapies for patients with chronic and complex health conditions. By working closely with healthcare providers, they offer one-on-one clinical guidance and ensure patients receive their treatments with minimal disruption — often delivering prescriptions directly to patients’ homes to simplify ongoing care.

Client requirements

To support safe, convenient medication delivery, the client needed a packaging solution that would:

  • Maintain 2–8°C for 24–36 Hours – Ensure cold chain integrity during home delivery.
  • Be Lightweight – Total package weight could not exceed 6 lbs, to meet shipping cost and handling requirements.
  • Replace EPS – Transition to a more sustainable, recyclable solution in place of traditional foam insulation.

Unique project challenges

Pre-Assembled Requirement – The packaging needed to arrive pre-kitted to streamline workflows and minimize handling time in their fulfilment process.

Thermogard solution

Thermogard delivered a fully compliant, pre-kitted cold chain system built around sustainability and simplicity:

  • PaperShield Ultra 2” Insulation – A high-performing paper-based liner that met temperature requirements while eliminating the need for EPS.
  • 24oz Gel Packs – Sized for optimal thermal performance while keeping total weight within the 6 lb limit.
  • Pre-Kitting Services – Thermogard assembled the full packaging kits in advance, ensuring seamless integration into the client’s packing line with minimal labour.

End result

The client successfully transitioned to a recyclable, pre-assembled packaging solution that maintained their product integrity and met all logistical constraints:

  • Validated Cold Chain Performance – Package held 2–8°C for the full 36-hour requirement.
  • EPS Eliminated – Moved entirely to paper-based insulation without compromising thermal protection.
